The University of Alicante, on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, now has 63 researchers in the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists, three more than in the previous edition of the ranking compiled every year since 2019 by Stanford University researchers using Elsevier’s Scopus database.

The list sorts scientists into 22 fields and ranks them on citations, adjusting for co-authorship and author position.

Two ways to measure impact

In the career category, which looks at lifetime impact, 43 Alicante researchers appear. In the single-year category, 46 do. Twenty-six make both lists.

Chemistry is the university’s strongest field, alongside applied physics and optics, with a growing presence in computer science and AI, microbiology, ecology, tourism and economics.

Vice-Rector for Research Juan Mora said the results “reflect the quality of the research carried out at the UA”, and credited the university’s strategy to attract talent.
