Spain gives €5m to its women's football league clubs and €1m to women's basketball
Spain's Council of Ministers approved two sports funding packages on 27 October. Liga F, the professional women's football league, gets €5 million for its clubs' running costs, and the Spanish Basketball Federation €1 million to professionalise the women's league. The grants are for 2026, and the amount per club has not been detailed.
Medical and health staff, travel to official matches, sports equipment and facilities. That is what the clubs of Liga F, Spain’s professional women’s football league, can spend the €5 million on that the Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday 27 October, at the proposal of Education and Sport Minister Milagros Tolón. The money will be split equally among the top-flight clubs.
The grant is part of two royal decrees worth just over €18 million for sport in 2026. The government has not said how much each club will get or whether the aid will be repeated next year.
Women’s basketball, for a third year running
The Spanish Basketball Federation receives €1 million to professionalise the women’s league. It is the third year in a row this grant has been paid, and it covers hiring technical, medical and management staff, training courses for coaches and referees, and promoting the competition. The federation also gets another €5 million for its U22 league.
La Vuelta Femenina and adapted sport
The same package includes €250,000 for La Vuelta Femenina, the women’s Tour of Spain organised by Unipublic, and another €250,000 for the sports unit of the National Hospital for Paraplegics in Toledo, through the Castilla-La Mancha regional government. There is also €1.5 million to cover travel for athletes from Ceuta, Melilla and the Canary and Balearic Islands, and €3.5 million for the Sant Cugat high-performance centre near Barcelona.
For the players, the difference is in the everyday: more medical staff and better conditions to play and travel.
