Ecuador's Elvira Espinosa, 17, wins the first gold of Dakar 2026
The swimmer from Guayaquil won the 400m freestyle at the Youth Olympic Games on Sunday 1 November in 4:22.87, the first gold medal awarded in Senegal. According to Panam Sports, it is the first Olympic medal in Ecuadorian swimming, although these are the Youth Games, for athletes aged 17 and under, not the senior Olympic Games.
Four minutes, 22.87 seconds. That was the time in which 17-year-old Elvira Espinosa, from Guayaquil, won the 400m freestyle at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on Sunday 1 November, according to the official World Aquatics results. It was the first gold medal awarded at these Games.
For Panam Sports, the body that brings together the National Olympic Committees of the Americas, the win is also the first Olympic medal in Ecuadorian swimming. One caveat: these are the Youth Olympic Games, for athletes aged 17 and under. At the senior Olympic Games, Ecuador has yet to win a swimming medal.
Three seconds clear of the field
Espinosa won the fastest heat in 4:22.87, ahead of South Africa’s Leah Markgraaff (4:26.13) and Belgium’s Célya Paques (4:28.37). She turned at 50m in 30.53 seconds and then held splits of around 33 seconds all the way to the wall.
“To be honest, I didn’t know if I’d be able to pull this off, but I did it. I’m very happy with the result,” she said, as quoted by Panam Sports. Right after the race she was told it was the first medal of the Games: “So I’m even happier. I was able to improve my time, and I feel very happy.”
From Guayaquil to Dakar
Espinosa competes for Guayas province and is coached by Rafael Herbas, according to the Guayas Sports Federation, as cited by Ecuadorian newspaper El Comercio. In July 2025 she won the 400m freestyle at the first South American Olympic Hopes tournament in Paraguay, and that November she set national pool records for her age group in the 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly in Ayacucho, Peru. In Dakar, the day before her final, she carried Ecuador’s flag at the opening ceremony alongside Joaquín Beltrán Ruales, according to the official photo captions shared by the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee.
Her gold is the first won by an Ecuadorian woman in the history of the Youth Olympic Games, according to Panam Sports. At Buenos Aires 2018, Ecuador won three medals at these Games: one silver and two bronzes.
Dakar 2026 is also the first Olympic event ever held in Africa, with around 2,700 athletes competing until 13 November.
Espinosa is back in the pool on Friday 6 November in the 200m butterfly, according to the World Aquatics start list.
